Why do birds fly in formation? According to Larry Gedney’s Article “Why Birds Fly in Vees,” a concept called the ‘Wingtip Vortex’ allows each bird in a proper vee to expend the same amount of energy. Vees do not have to be symmetrical, but the important thing is that the front bird should have others on both sides. “The savings in energy brought about by formation flying can be truly significant. A flight of 25 birds can fly 70 % farther using the same amount of energy.” Here's to good wingmen.
